A Partnership in Observational and Computational Astronomy

Lawrence Livermore Scientists Speak at SC State
November 13 and 14, 2008

Visiting scientists from Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) spoke to students and faculty at SC State Thursday, Nov. 13 and Friday, Nov. 14. Their visit is part of a $2 million award from the National Science Foundation to enhance astronomy at SC State entitled A Partnership in Observational and Computational Astronomy.

Dr. Kennedy Reed, LLNL physicist, and Dr. David Dearborn, LLNL astrophysicist and weapons designer, will speak to the Society of Physics Students and faculty members as well as tour the campus and meet with SC State University administrators.

Reeds presentation, Physics in Africa, discusses the research and training programs in physics in several African countries including their successes as well as the barriers faced working under very difficult circumstances.

Reed has held appointments in Germany, Great Britain, Senegal and Ghana and was a professor of Physics at Morehouse College in Atlanta before his work at LLNL. He was the 2003 recipient of the John Wheatly Award from the American Physical Society for his work on promoting physics research and education in Africa. His own research incorporates lasers in the study of atomic collisions in high temperature plasmas.





Dr. David Dearborn

Dearborns talk, Research at Lawrence Livermore, will provide an overview of the wide range of programs supported at this world-renowned facility including work in astrophysics, energy and the environment, bioscience and biotechnology as well as its core responsibilities related to nuclear weapons, and homeland security.

Dearborn has held appointments in Poland and England, as well as the California Institute of Technology. He received the 1998 Shelby Fellow Award from the Australian Academy of Science as well as other awards related to the history of astronomy. His research areas includes stellar evolution, astro-particle physics and nuclear weapons design and testing.
